Some books are so wonderful you can’t help but share them with the world.
Some books are so wonderful you want to hide them because they are that special.
Some books are so wonderfully horrible that you must share their faults to prevent others from making the same mistake reading this.
Maybe horrible was a strong word, but this was not a pleasant reading experience.
Most people know the musical. You may not know this was based on a book, which was actually based on an older book series.
Wicked by Gregory Maguire.
As you can see, this chronicles the story of the Wicked Witch of the West. An invented backstory for the iconic green foe from the original book and well-known film.
This may sound like such an exciting story, and the musical definitely achieves this story. It’s the book that’s the hang up.
When I first started reading this book, a friend who had already read the book told me that this novel is very….political. Not good. Not bad. Just political.
That is the most accurate description of this book I have ever heard.
It’s not a bad novel. It has its moments. It just drags with the descriptions of who’s in power, who’s in charge of what. Nothing like the musical depicts.
